Getting an eye exam at a department store, like Wal-Mart, is a good idea. It’s going to be quite a bit cheaper than going to an optometrist that needs to have their own building or office. Wal-Mart has the space and all they have to do is hire a local eye doctor to work there.
With most department stores, you’re going to pay between $70-$100 for an eye exam. Walmart will definitely be on the lower end of that range – probably about the cheapest place around.
When it comes time to ordering your lenses, make sure that you shop around. Walmart uses 1-800-Contacts for their lenses but you might be able to find other places that sell contact lenses cheaper. The contacts I get are more expensive since I have astigmatism and when I shop around, I’ve saved up to $200. That’s huge savings! There’s so much competition that if you do just a small amount of shopping around, you’ll find them pretty cheap.
